The Burden of Health Care – Words from Bill
Jul 20th
I hear it over and over:
“I can’t afford health care for my employees, and when I try and hire the best people, they always ask about health care. When we don’t have what they expect they go somewhere else”
We aren’t getting the best of the best in health care because small business can’t afford the expense.
I believe small business contributes more than any other factor to the success of a great economy. And our economy would grow faster and come out of recessions faster if we could invest our profits into our employees, new ideas, and growth instead of auxiliary high costs like health care.
Many businesses outsource and export jobs as much as possible to save money for health care expenses and other such costs of doing business. We don’t want to–we want to hire Americans–but we simply can’t compete without offering at least some decent health care to obtain and keep good employees. Health care costs aren’t the only reason we export jobs, but it’s definitely a major one. But often it comes down to the major decision: stay in business or not!
Health care is the next highest expense after payroll, making us forget or diminish marketing and advertisement, designing new products, or investing in new methods. And when a business is run by fear of crippling expenses, or solely to make the accountants and bureaucrats happy, advancement and progress go out the window, improvement and growth disappear, and well, no one is happier for it.
In the area of health care at least, we have to figure a way to get affordable coverage for our employees. I don’t have a ready answer for this one. I don’t know what will fix this. But I do know that if we start talking about it, there is a great chance someone will come up with a brilliant solution.
So there it is, one of the big problems plaguing American small business. Tell me your ideas and let’s talk about what we can do to make things better!

Respect Your Staff – Words from Bill
Jul 13th
Here’s another important business principle I have always used in my companies: respect your staff. Putting your people ahead of product or profit, and communicating respect to them are key parts to good leadership. If your people are not following you willingly, you’re no leader at all.
Making the time to talk with your staff is a must. Approach the relationship with gentleness, and humility. Gentleness doesn’t come naturally to most people, especially leaders. But if you speak to them respectfully, and treat them well every day, in every interaction, you will build a relationship that will make your enterprise strong and successful.

Personal Business Principles – Words from Bill
Jul 6th
All individuals and all organizations have core values, beliefs about what’s good and bad, right and wrong. These values guide what we think and feel, what we say, and how we act.
And they matter. Your employees are aware of whether their leaders act in a manner consistent with the company’s stated values. A leader is essentially on trial, everyday, all day.
I recommend the following as values that a business owner should consider and communicate, and that I have always used in my companies:
- Put people ahead of product or profit.
- Value integrity more than profit.
- Know that the company exists to meet the needs of its customers with products and/or services.
- In business as in life, treat others the way you want to be treated.
- Tell the truth, even when it hurts.
