More Than A Hobby – Book Review

by David Green
Founder of Hobby Lobby

Simply put but great basic principles in building a business.
Retailing – Retailing has four keys.
•    Run your business harmony with God’s laws. This will keep you on an ethical footing. Seek to please God in everything you do.
•    Focus on people more than money. Without employees and customers, you’re going nowhere. Make sure you never stop thinking about the customer’s perspective. And make sure you have the right people at the helm of each area.
•    Be a merchant. Notice, I didn’t just say businessperson. That’s too generic. Your core activity is buying and selling merchandise. That’s what it’s all about. The rest is periphery, or even distraction.
•    Install the proper systems to support the first three keys.

The warehouse and the corporate office are supposed to make things convenient for the stores. Not the other way around.

To explain what makes Hobby Lobby tick – if customers don’t find enjoyment and satisfaction by coming into your store, it won’t matter if you have the greatest, fanciest, most sophisticated business model in the world.

Pour Your Heart Into It – Book Review

by Howard Schultz
CEO of Starbucks

Great book on how Howard did it with Starbucks.
I can’t give you any secret recipe for success, any foolproof plan for making it into the world of business. But my own experience suggests that it is possible to start from nothing and achieve even beyond your dreams.

The Mom Factor – Book Review

By Nora Lee

Our primary market with our last business was Mom’s. Great book on selling and understanding your particular market.

What we know about Mom – Between 80 and 88 % of the buying is done by women. Not only do they make the purchasing decisions on traditional family needs such as clothing and groceries, but also on telephones, Internet services ,a television and cable, stocks, and insurance policies. That’s a lot of feminine financial power.

Mom’s think differently, act differently, and certainly spend money differently from our counterparts with no children.

Most Moms work. Among mothers 15 to 44 years old who have children over one year old, 72 % are in the labor force. Even among mothers with infants (under one year), 55% are working.

Where Have All The Leaders Gone? Book Review

By Lee Iacocca

Great book on finding the right leaders for your organization.
People
Here’s what management is about: Pick good people and set the right priorities.
People and Priorities, it’s that simple.
You succeed or fail based on your team. If you want to succeed, you’ve got to have a group of people that knows what they’re doing. Vince Lombardi said, “Teamwork is what makes the Green Bay Packers great. People who work together will win – period.”
